A respect for life is one thing all established religions have in common, but drawing scientific and political conclusions based on one religious philosophy over all others runs counter to the idea of separation of church and state.

Ignoring the contentious first part of the sentence, I do not see how a scientific conclusion can be based on one or other religious philosophy. Science is definitely taken out of context here.

This administration and the religious-wrong (there is nothing right about them) only care for humans before they are born (this article) and after they have died (Terri Schiavo).

While alive, humans don't deserve healtcare, criminals should be put to death, it's OK to invade other countries and cause massive deaths of the local population (Iraq), only abstinence-only programs get government funding (they are against condoms that could halt or slow down the HIV epidemic in Africa that causes 1.6 million of AIDS deaths each and every year).

This has to end and will come to an end in just about 6 months. We're counting the days to January 20th 2009.

This is not 'newly made up' this a the very old Catholic doctrine : all Contraceptives are murder instruments, that's why the Vatican is not allowing condoms.
And of cause the Pauline dogma is : best no intercourse at all, and if then without lust only inside marriage in missionary position for the solely purpose of reproduction.

The result of this Hypocrisies is leading to real abortions, often illegally performed in backyard clinics. In the Philippines the family planning is a taboo issue for all politicians not to draw the wrath of the powerful catholic church. Result: from 1.4 Million unwanted pregnancies 473,000 are aborted - using contraceptives would be the easier method.

To paraphrase an Australian PM (Whitlam), "in Bush's case, abortion should be retrospective"
Seriously, there is an interesting connection between abortion and crime rates (see "Freakonomics" by Levitt & Dubner), maybe Bush is preparing a crime wave for 15 years in the future so that they can run a tough anti-crime election campaign!

Of course no one has the right to deny you medical care because their imaginary friend 'told' them to!
It's all very well to bitch and moan about this, but what can we DO about it? What can I do about it?
These aren't rhetorical questions, I really, emphatically want answers.

There is another twist which isn't covered here.

According to my daughter, who was an intern at NARAL, if you are interviewed for a job at a clinic that does provide contraception or abortion then questions about your religious affiliations and beliefs are not allowed.

This means that organisations which support planned parenthood may have people in post who can refuse to give you advice on the basis of their beliefs.

Permitting religion as an excuse to not do your job is a more general problem, and one of the more absurd cultural conventions around today. I'd really like to see it stamped out.

Hmm. Is miscarriage an 'act of god'?

Presumably many who hold this belief think that any action that destroys human life after conception is the termination of a pregnancy, and so would be included in their definition of the term 'abortion.'"

Never any mention of the fact that this worldview implies that god is quite the abortionist.

How can a poll which only has the backing of 49% of the population be used as support for this idea?

I think the idea of using a poll is preposterous, anyway. We don't ask the general public at what point they think a malignant tumour becomes untreatable.

America needs a healthy dose of pragmatic thinking, especially when it comes to matters of sex and reproduction. Although here in the U.K., you can be protected as a homophobic if you shroud it in religion.

I agree, I was quite amazed when I read Sam Harris's book and discovered that only about 25%, possibly lower, of abortions are actually unwanted pregnancies, God does not like babies does he?!

They never ever mention it and continue to peddle this garbage about "souls" without having the faintest clue about biology!
