An idea ready for takeoff - Comments

"Charles has another idea: he has a 14-hour cut of the film and a plan for a TV series of half-hour episodes. Every week, Maher could come into your living room to challenge another believer on how it is that God can hear everyone's prayers, or why homosexuals are so feared by the devout."

That would be fun to watch, which cable channel would show it though?

This is the first time I've seen "meme" used as verb -- "meming."

We need to get as many Xtian organisations as possible to condemn or ban it. It would be good to get it banned in Turkey, too, if possible...

Are there anti-religious activists who infiltrate religious organizations and try to make them do stupid things like ban stuff? That would be so cool.

Alright...

A meme is NOT some kind of special super-idea epidemic. A meme is NOT something that some ideas are and some ideas aren't, any more than some lengths of chromosomal DNA are part of genes and some aren't. Meme is a term for an idea, a term that evokes a specific perspective, sure, but a meme is just an idea that is propagated. At all. Period.

People misusing the word meme like this guarantees that there will never be a proper science of memetics.

Seems like they could take a cue from Moore and put the 14 hr version online for free. After the initial release of the movie and some DVD sales, why not? Make back whatever money you can, then give us the long version for the meme's sake.

Re: TuftedPuffin

Good point. Really deflates the rhetoric when you realize the points attributed to memes don't apply to unsuccessful memes.

whose long beard makes him look like half of ZZ Top

I thought there are 3 guys in ZZTop, 2 with long beards ? So he looks like 1.5 musos ? A rather strained simile..

If we make the word meme a meme then it will be forever linked to Dawkins which, in turn, links it to atheism

I think if people get the idea in their head that you need to be dumb to believe in god they will, at least, behave as though they don't believe. Children never want to feel stupid, and religious adults are still children.

I know nothing about this so I think of opera:

" MEMEMEMEMEMEME"......

completely pointless, I know.
Like a flaming beer, or a monkey with a gun.

IS a monkey with a gun pointless?
