I understand that you are angry, mattincinci, but all men are not pigs. If all men endorsed this sort of behaviour we would be living in a very different world to the one we are in.

What might be more true is that the influence of religion seems to make good people do bad things. If I'm reading the articles correctly, these sorts of cases are on the increase purely because of Sharia law. That speaks volumes about what the application of real Islamic law can do to "justice".

Courts in your country destroy the lives of men and women every day for possessing much less harmful drugs than alcohol. Do you similarly call that ridiculous and sick, and the American men who implement the policies pigs?

The comparison is not to excuse the Malaysians' behavior, but you should be able to understand how people can be so irrational about the policies and apathetic towards the injustice, since that's the general attitude within your country as well.

Also, the reason she stated for wanted the caning in public was to dissuade other Muslims from drinking alcohol, unfortunately, rather than to raise public indignation.

In the northern backwater state of Kalentan ruled by the hardline Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, authorities have decreed that supermarkets must have separate checkout queues for men and women and beaches be segregated.

Suppose some Muslims think male sperm is gaseous...

I find it hard to use a western supermarket check-out without ending-up having sex with someone. Segregated check-outs would be an excellent idea.

Segregated beaches and bathing would be sensible. Give men the bottom half of the pool, and confine women to the top. Quite a few problems would vanish in a matter of minutes, assuming we use lead weights to help keep them in their part of the pool.

I have noticed that plenty of girls get caned from drinking beer in the UK as well.

Another load of horse shit form religious crazies. I'm amazed that the evangelicals in the USA don't try to do something similar. Oh but hey, they do let their children died from lack of proper medical care while praying for a faith healing. Its sick and disgusting!

The harassment of this woman reminds me of how women are treated in the U.S. by mobs of crazed Christians when they try to enter a perfectly legal woman's health clinic.

So much hate in the name of religion.

I think what you meant was "some men are not pigs". It's the same confusion seen when the cell-phone companies advertise "service not available in all areas".

Also, kudos to Richard and Josh for having the guts to post an image of Ms. Kartika's 7-year-old son. I expect the outcry from the muslim world just about any time now. ;-)

This may or may not be true. It is not uncommon for people under stress to say what they are forced to say.

This woman may be smart enough to know how brainless these twits are and by saying she wants it in publics to dissuade people from drinking she knows it will have an opposite effect and show how cruel canning can be.

Singapore's education system is light years ahead of Malaysia's and because these fundies reject most normal education for an Islamic one I bet she has twice the smarts. ;)

Given her high exposure and that of Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, then the apparent high female involvement in the Iranian protests, including their new saint, Neda, I think the uber-Arabisation of Islam might be hitting a rocky patch.

Be interesting to see what happens....

Interesting too how both cases have sparked outrage in their home countries....

This person:

An unidentified "whipping officer" told local journalists: "Sharia whipping is more like caning naughty schoolboys. In sharia the punishment is not in the force of the whipping but to bring shame. The whipping implement is supposed to be soft and supple, so as to inflict the least pain."

Didn't go to the same school as me.

As bad as this whole thing is I don't understand why it is only ever seen as evil and brutal when it is a woman that is going to be beaten. Males in asian countries are brutally beaten regularly, sometimes so badly that they need skin grafts and up to 6 months to fully heal. Almost always, in the same countries, when a woman commits the same crime they receive a totally different are far more humane punishment.

If corporal punishment is wrong it is always wrong, not just when it happens to a woman.

Caning = Sexual Repression

I swear the two have to be related. And who wouldn't want to sexually repress such a lovely woman?

Okay, in bad taste, but nonetheless a valid point. Make it a spectacle. Show the world. Clever girl. If it weren't for the sexual repression inherent in the faith, this would be a non-issue. Glad to see she's using her intelligence to make a stand, knowing full well there's no way she can beat the charge.

All you atheist fundamentalists are so insensitive. Don't you know how rude and intolerant and uncool it is to oppose the divine judgment of Allah, as prescribed in the Holy Quran and as administered by this honorable court?

Don't you know how much it pains a pious Muslim man that you would criticize his deeply-held faith that a woman should be caned for drinking beer?

This is why people can't stand you "New Atheist" militant fundamentalists!
