We received a petition asking:
âWe the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to remove collective worship from all non-faith schools.â
Details of Petition:
âAs a British Citizen I wish to encourage my child to understand, respect and tolerate those with different cultural and religious backgrounds. Having sent my child to a non-faith school in the UK I find my child is being encouraged to participate in collective worship broadly Christian in nature. I have the option to remove my child but feel that this puts unnecessary pressure on myself and my child within the school and our community, therefore our views are not understood, respected nor tolerated by them or the Government and this isnât just. Please take collective worship out of non-faith schools and leave it for faith schools, places of worship and home.â
Read the Governmentâs response
All community, foundation or voluntary schools must offer a daily act of collective worship which is broadly of a Christian character in keeping with the religious traditions of this country. This should be appropriate to the age and family background of the pupils.
Collective worship is a long standing aspect of school life. Many parents want their children to benefit from collective worship whether or not they have a strong Christian belief themselves.
