I truly truly truly wish you get through this as soon as possible. You've fought many fights with illusions, however, reality is far tougher, but nothing beats the Hitch.

This is just awful.

I've truly learned so much from him over the last few years. I just bought & I'm half way through Hitch 22.

My very best wishes, Hitch.

There are some horrible, if sadly predictable, hate-filled comments on the Vanity Fair page with the original message.

Very sad news. Small donation has been made to cancer research instead of a prayer for you.

Well, all the faithful will be gloating that this is god's punishment of course. They've already started with vile comments at Vanity Fair.

Just the tip of the iceberg I'm afraid.

This is sad news. Perhaps we could get a petition going that President Obama award him the Medal of Freedom.

My whisky-slamming, cigar-smoking father beat throat cancer at 65 with ease! Hitch had this coming for decades... Long live CH!

mordacious1's Avatar Comment 17 by mordacious1

I was worried that it might be something serious when he canceled his book tour. I figured he wouldn't do that if it wasn't serious. This is bad news indeed, this is one of those cancers that doesn't have a good prognosis (depending on how early they catch it and how deep into the tissue it goes). Hopefully, Christopher will pull through this with some luck and good science.

Most of the comments at Vanity Fair are, by far, completely supportive.

Hitch will fight this hard, like all his fights.

Mr. Hitchens, I wish you all the best going forward in you overcoming this most grave challenge. You are a tough enough of an SOB that with attitude you can beat the bastard. Hang on to that. I look forward to hearing your great (albeit raspy) voice again. You're going to scare alot of Nurses that care for you. Make friends with the Nurse that doesn't scare. That Nurse WILL be your greatest advocate.

Good luck Hitchens.

I'm a huge fan of yours mate. You just live your life how you want to live it to the very end.

I don't know who said the following but I think their wise words:

"Don't fear death, fear the unfulfilled life".

I hope that Mr. Hitchens's treatment is completely successful with as few adverse side effects as possible.

I will be starting a course of chemotherapy and immunotherapy for lymphoma next week, so it is easy for me to empathize with Mr. Hitchens.

I hope to hear good news on this topic in the future!

I don't know what to say. So many of the characters who populated the the Oxford student left in the late 60's/early 70's seem to be dead or dying. I hope you pull through this Hitch and continue for many years. But, of course, cancer cares nothing for my (or anyone else's) hopes.

And if he does just fine, it'll be God's forgiveness. Indeed.
