Real men find Church too girly - Comments

Saerain's Avatar Comment 1 by Saerain

Frankly, I have a lot of difficulty taking seriously, or having a positive opinion of, anyone who uses a term like 'real man' unless it is in contrast to a cardboard cutout of man.

Every time I've seen or heard 'real men' spoken of with sincerity, it has been a part of a profoundly ignorant sentiment that inevitably leaves me embarrassed to be of the same gender.

Besides, everyone knows that real men wear skirts.

"How would it go down to decorate with swords, or pictures of knights, or flaming torches?"

And that would be progress - how?
Let us leave the inquisition, burnings and crusades behind us.

The charity, which also recommends subjects as "pornography" are discussed in church men's groups

Doesn't this already happen? Way back in the 60's I had to attend lessons on Friday evenings on Catholicism because I didn't have the privilege of attending a religious school. The priest who gave the lessons, "wee Lochie" was our nickname for him, spent an inordinate amount of time talking about pornography and the evils thereof. Looking back, for someone who had never, ever, ever, ever indulged himself in same, he had an extensive knowledge of the subject.

I was going to suggest more sultry nun's outfits, at least for the attractive ones (What is that saying about nothing is a greater waste than an attractive nun?), but I like your thinking.

It does remind me of Star Trek - TNG (or rather the sexually-obsessed generation), with the Betazoid nude weddings, which would be another interesting idea for the bridal party at least.

When I read what little the front page of richarddawkins.net had to say about this article, I didn't know whether this was a finding by the church's fans or detractors, but I was really hoping the former, if only because I don't want to see churches adopting swords, or ... Oh dear, they really are thinking of trying those things. What's really weird is that they seem unaware they've been here before. Just quote some evil Bible verses. What Jesus said about swords is an option. Of course, they'd better not, or they will literally be going back to the Middle ages. Why are they even considering that prospect?

Its always been the case that women outnumber the men in church, even during the roman period this was so.

The sociologist Callum Brown has argued that this is why the churches have experienced such a decline in recent decades. During the 1960's women became empowered in ways unheard of before, and the male hierarchies of the churches attacked these new freedoms. Result; Women voted with their feet. Churches emptied.

I'm with Saerain on this, I hate the term "Real men" because it implies that gay men or metrosexual men are counterfeit men somehow, like we're made out of paper mache or wool.
It's a phrase used by the type of guy who thinks Jim Davidson is funny and that being a boorish wife abusing, beer swilling, football chanting philistine is the proof of your manhood rather than say a pair of testicles.
As for why the church hasn't already adopted this, it's hard to say, as the sexism and homophobia in the clergy is already well catered for, so what's with the guys in frocks?
