“Our goal has been to reach out to those who already agree with us so they don’t feel isolated,” Peek said. “So if this damage turns out to be vandalism, it will only increase our conviction as to how necessary our message is.”

I like that sentence at the end there.

You know what they say, "No publicity is bad publicity!"

Funny thing is, that if the vandals had a better scientific understanding of fulcrum, load, counterweight, force, etc. they could have brought that sign down with relative ease.

Then again, perhaps some heavy object flying off a passing train could have struck it in front, although we don’t see any such object nearby and the billboard vinyl isn’t torn.

Oh! See that, fundies? That's what's called "reasoning". Atheists are usually much better at it, because it has played a large part in us becoming atheist.

@CaptainMandate and @Imroy...

HA!

Oh... and on a somewhat unrelated note, I had a dream last night that I met YouTube's VenomFangX in real life and tried to convince him of evolution, and I was talking about how "serious churchmen" accept evolution, just like Richard always does. I forget what happened next... it's kind of fuzzy... but VenomFangX got pissed off. I can't remember what he did though. Weird.

have this then put a cctv

then get the criminal to pay for fixing of board and only a nice large fine as a punishment then use the money to fund free thinking :P

i think this could be a great way to generate money?

considering the amount of believers (illogical thinkers)

Interesting choice to put in St. Augustine on US-1 who's only claim to fame is it is the oldest town in America.
There is considerably more traffic on I-95 which is the preferred method of reaching St. Augustine anyway, unless you wanted a more scenic, slower, and longer route on US-1.

@bethe123: Billboards cost money, and the higher the traffic, the greater the fee. My guess is that the placement of the billboard was, at least in part, a budgetary issue.

*wishful thinking* - Since Obama will be in the area(KSC), he takes a side trip to condemn vandalism of this type of billboard/show concrete support for the non believers he mentions in his speeches.

Well, I'm not surprised. Fundies happen to be crybabies in the face of contradiction with their beliefs.

Which is ironic, considering they believe in something inherently contradictory. Anyway, I checked the forecast in that area the sign was destroyed in for shits-and-giggles since April 9th (as far back as it would allow me) and the wind conditions were all very mild. Nothing above 20mph.

Probably vandalism.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I went to http://neflorida.unitedcor.org/ to see what they said and they've got a nice high-res picture of the damaged billboard and surrounding area. http://firstcoastfreethoughtsociety.org/cms/images/stories/St_Aug_Billboard_Down_03.JPG

What I love is that, except for the followers of this site and a few others, these signs have little to no exposure save for local residents. Nationally, the signs rate right up there with following the First Lady to the White House Garden to learn proper weeding techniques. Now with this vandalism and protest people are forming opinions one way or the other and I don't think there are as many people behind them as they would wish. I just love the way these faitheads have revived the phrase " Hoist on your own petard", I always thought that was a fun turn of phrase.

LOL if it were a hurricane you'd have seen some damaged foliage around the sign even without going back to look at wind speeds.

Yes, that is precisely why I included a larger picture of the surrounding area. I just wanted to throw some extra "Ho, ho, who has motives for this? Oh look at that, natural occurrences are so unlikely." in there.

Surely, no matter how misunder-edumacted they are - they'll now realise that if they vandalise the signs..not only will they be replaced but the exposure from the media means the message reaches x10000 people!

We'll then have to vandalise our own signs ;-)

Indeed, we just make snarky mocking comments amongst ourselves about their signs, and only if they have a double entente or something in them.

. . .if they had a "better scientific understanding" of religion, they would'nt try to pull it down.

Could it have been hit by a flying teapot?
