Pope's 'revenge' as LA gets Opus Dei bishop - Comments

Agrajag's Avatar Comment 1 by Agrajag

Some of its priests practise self-flagellation while praying to the Virgin Mary and also wear a cilice – a spiked garter – to help them to mortify the flesh and avoid sexual sins.

It's probably harder to seduce kids when practicing this sort of behavior, so maybe it's a good thing. O_o

Loonies within a lunatic cult, the RCC just shot itself in the foot, once again!

Instead of being mor eopen and honest the RCC appears to be clamping down tighter than before, how long before it regresses to the inquisition?

I think that the more the RCC regresses the better. It will only hasten its demise.

Hear that sound? That's the sound of millions of Californian Latinos running out the door of the cathedral and into the big Evangelical megachurch down the road. If you doubt me, look it up.

I for one welcome this move. This is going to turn into a spectacular own-goal.

This is not a particularly clever move. To a large extent the Catholic Church has only survived in modern Western nations because it turns a blind eye to the fact that so many of its priests and parishioners are liberal and "soft" on many of Catholicism's less defensible dogmas and practices.

This man is not going to win any new converts, and is far more likely to alienate more moderate Catholics who at the moment in contradiction to their Church's teaching live their lives as though sex between consenting adults was normal, contraception was a necessity and homosexuality was completely acceptable.

Why are they getting so upset over Dan Brown's books?

They are clearly stated as fiction unlike the book they base their whole lives around.

"Is an Opus Dei Bishop kind of like a SS general? "

you might be onto something here, the correct term would be "Gruppenführer" then. (Major-General of the Weapons SS)

Opus Dei:

Some of its priests practise self-flagellation while praying to the Virgin Mary

4 You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing children for the iniquity of parents, to the third and the fourth generation of those who reject me,

Cognitive dissonance in the fuzzy minded. On the bright side, celibacy means they don't have to worry about punishment down the generations.

None of the 2,000 priests of Opus Dei, which has the status of a "personal prelature" of the Pope, has ever been embroiled in a sexual scandal.

Countdown starting.

Good grief. We all better watch ourselves, for surely sometime soon we will witness another Crusade and an army of Opus Dei soldiers marching forth from the vaults of the Vatican to slay this world of heathens. And Benedict will be riding valiantly, in shining white armor, way way back behind them all, in his little car with the bulletproof glass...

I wish I could agree with you, but I don't think it's about to self destruct; I bet they've got a ton of myths and fantasies up there sleeve that'll help them re-invent themselves.

And in any case, the RCC is an incredibly powerful organization; what it did to Natasha it's done to billions of others for tens of centuries.

This actually isn't that surprising. Opus Dei rules are designed to make it virtually impossible for there to be any sort of sexual contact except between married members. Moreover there is no shortage of members wishing to be priests so they can be a bit picky about whom they accept.

Good news for the Catholic kids in California, the Opus Dei priests will not beat them up, these masochists are busy beating themselves up in religious self flagellation and wrapping (a kind of ) barb wire around their legs.
So what is papa Ratzis next move ? Hand over the Catholic leadership of the UK to the Holocaust denying Pius brothers which are residing there? Their leader bishop Williamson was just sentenced today from a German court in Regensburg to 10.000 Euro fine for Holocaust denial during an interview with a Swedish journalist conducted in Regensburg.

So an Opus Die priest has never raped a child.

Is this the best recommendation they can think of ?

Maybe Ratzinger's trying to pack the next conclave with Opus Dei members to make sure the next pope doesn't posthumously excommunicate him.

re: #28 amuck;
You should note that the statement is not that no OD priest has ever raped a child, only that none has ever "been embroiled in a sexual scandal." Seems to me that is a major (unfavorable) distinction.
re: #6 Bonzai;
I'd look at it more like an SS storm trooper. The first sentence of the article says he was "parachuted" into LA. I know that wasn't literally true, of course, but the mental image of a black-robed storm trooper dropping in on the "City of Angels" is hard to get out of my mind.
