The bit of harmless (or is it) reverse sexism at the start is interesting, because we all think it's perfectly socially acceptable. But what if the boy had said "Well, girls definitely are." Then it's not so funny, it would be outrageously inappropriate and blatantly sexist.

We still have a long long way to go.

AtheistEgbert, You have a point, although at least Gary Trudeau is a man making the joke. Seems it might be a little more questionable coming from a woman. Such jokes are a little like those now tedious TV commercials that make the husband look stupid and the wife look always brilliant.

What is considered funny, when it comes to putdowns, is interesting. It seems to have to do with who is considered dominant, with the dominant groups being more acceptably belittled. For instance, it’s enjoyable to hear jokes about rich, powerful people. But jokes about poor people aren’t so funny.

PS--I myself don't feel that sharing a common ancestor with apes is belittling. :-)

AtheistEgbert, I'm a teacher and can assure you that this cartoon accurately reflects the daily banter in a classroom. It's a character talking, not the cartoonist.

Brilliant cartoon. Can someone provide a link to the mirror image of this on South Park, where a creationist teacher is obliged to 'teach' evolution?"

It is socially acceptable for girls to put down boys, however that does not make it right.

I find the sexism refreshing. Makes up for years of elementary school where I was called a "bleeder" by the sweet boys in the class. Oh, and that was just the start of the harassment by the boys, while the teachers would look the other way or say, "boys will be boys." C'mon. You've heard the blonde jokes, where's the male equivalent?

Anyway...loved the cartoon. Hopefully a few apes sitting around their breakfast table actually read this. Probably weren't able to read it in most of Louisiana! (Just joking.) :))

I don't really understand if you are trying to say that the original joke really isnt socially acceptable, or if it was reversed that it would be sexist, or if that was a sarcastic commentary and that it would be considered innapropriate when it really isnt.

I guess I am having a hard time because I dont see anything wrong either with the joke the way it stands, or if it was reversed.

I feel sorry for students in Louisiana having creationist dogma thrust upon them by the state. This cartoon should be pinned up in every classroom in the state as a reminder.

It's very reminiscent of the situation in the Australian state of Queensland about twenty odd tears ago where a politician (Joh Bjelke Petersen) a Right Wing religious extremist who turned the state into a basket case. The situation became so bad there that if you said "I'm going to Queensland" the reply was always "Oh you better turn your watch back 20 years" this could well be Louisiana in the near future.
