It has been reported in the last couple of hours that the ruling Conservative government is going to back the Labour opposition motion in Parliament tomorrow calling on Murdoch to withdraw his takeover plans for BSkyB. For any government to actually support an opposition motion is an extremely exceptional and rare event and the strongest possible sign yet that Murdoch's bid could well be dead in the water. It is not inconcievable that the takeover still go through, but if elected MP's vote overwhelmingly and across benches against, then it would require the most blatantly reckless and high-risk offensive by News Corp to override such a clearly expressed will of Parliament.

The balance has tilted quite decisively against Murdoch during the last week in a way that would have been unthinkable only a month ago. Nonetheless, despite the consensus which is likely to emerge tomorrow, it remains vital that the public keep up the pressure.

Let's face reality--the signatures did not have the required effect, and Murdoch is as powerful as ever.

Corruption does not spring only from a single man, but it's endemic in our society. It's what ultimately will bring down all forms of power, not the false belief of power from the people.

Thanks for the heads-up, Egbert.

Now where's the 'unsign' button?

If Murdoch is to be deemed unfit to own and run BSkyB then how can he be considered fit to run his operation as it now stands?

Either he is fit to take the prize or else he should not even be in the business at all.

Eh? The last petition was calling for the bid to be referred to the Competition Commission and for a full public inquiry. Both those demands have now been met. MP's from every party have been queuing up to publicly denounce a man they previously sucked up to, the whole News International brand in the UK is fast becoming toxic, a takeover which looked like a done deal only a month ago now hangs in the balance... And yet you insist he's as "powerful as ever"! Nobody is saying he is now powerless. But his political capital is considerably, unquestionably diminished compared to only a week ago.

Corruption does not spring only from a single man, but it's endemic in our society. It's what ultimately will bring down all forms of power, not the false belief of power from the people.

This is hopelessly romantic nonsense. There is no immutable guaranteed law of nature that insists the corrupt will necessarily bring themselves down. Without exposure and scrutiny, the corrupt can and will continue quite merrily indefinitely. We all know that corruption is not confined to one individual, so why mention it?

The logical conclusion of your argument that corruption somehow automatically brings about it's own end is that a society therefore need not do anything at all to tackle corruption! It will simply deal with itself by some magical, unexplained process! Well if you want to see what a 'do nothing' approach looks like, then look at a country like India. The UK is far from perfect, but the benefits of doing something to tackle corruption as opposed to nothing are so obvious, so clear to see all over the world, that your argument looks rather surreal, frankly.

As an American, I have no say in British manners. However, last I knew, the Obama administration was looking to see if he violated any U.S. laws in his actions over there. Hell, I'd love to see Fox News having been caught in the same crap too!

Well if the Murdoch empire ever falls it'll certainly be a good thing but we won't be rid of all stupid and dogmatic medias. As someone once said, freedom requires eternal vigilance. Good thing if we get rid of Murdoch's propaganda machine though, signed!

I e-mailed my MP.

I'm not sure of the value of these petitions - too much chance of fake names etc. If my MP wants to validate me, he can e-mail me back and I will introduce myself to him at his constituency office.

It's easy enough to get your MP's e-mail.

We need something like this on our side of the pond too. In the US, Murdoch controls tabloids, regular newspapers, The Wall Street Journal, the Fox Television Network, home of Fox News. The latter is a sewer outlet of right wing political and Christian propaganda. At the moment it is the most popular "news channel" in the United States. It's run by Roger Ailes and he does it shamelessly, He learned his craft under Richard Nixon, and later worked for Ronald Reagan and the first George Bush. Watching Fox News is like watching a weird alternate reality in which all evil in the world comes from Democrats, Obama and "godless atheists."

If you want to know what Murdoch plans to do to you in the UK if he gets hold of Sky, watch some of the Fox stuff you can find on the web, notably Fox's Bill O'Reilly skirmishes with Richard Dawkins and some "interviews" (actually hectoring) of Annie Laurie Gaylor of the Freedom From Religion Foundation. Fox News propaganda brought on the current national debt stalemate between the Congressional Republicans and President Obama which threatens the US' credit rating. Because of the Fox-promoted Tea Party, Republican politicians fear even looking like they might compromise with the Democrats over such things as properly taxing wealthy incomes.

I recommend reading this Wikipedia Article to see just how much this fetid octopus has grown. You'll see listings all over the world!

Thanks for Reading.

With that reasoning we could find ourselves killing half the american population and most muslims too. Sure Murdoch is a stupid and arrogant Australian cowboy but he's not 'evil' and surely enough doesn't deserve death. His view of the world is skewed that's all. I think avaaz is a great way to get things into action but they should work on their demonization tactics, or rather stop using them, it's just silly.

re #22;

Are you really comparing Murdoch to Hitler and Stalin? C'mon, get a grip man. He's nothing more or less than a very ruthless, end-justifies-the-means-type business-man who's built himself an empire by exploiting his 'qualities' to the full. He may well be a nasty piece of work; his politics and policies may be abhorrent to most of us; but when I see this...
...well, replace 'Murdoch' with 'The Jew' and I could be reading a speech by one of the very men that you liken Murdoch to.

Scupper his plans by all means, oppose him at every opportunity, even prosecute him if there is evidence to support a prosecution, but don't start calling for the extermination of him and his family.
