All Non-Africans Part Neanderthal, Genetics Confirm - Comments

skiles1's Avatar Comment 1 by skiles1

Neanderthals possessed the gene for language and had sophisticated music, art and tool craftsmanship skills, so they must have not been all that unattractive to modern humans at the time.

I've dated women for all those same reasons. I know the feeling.

Lots of Africans must be part Neanderthal too what with all the shagging that has gone on over time.

I thought scientists were certain that neanderthals had gone extinct with barely any interaction with modern humans. That's some interesting twist, so these huge hairy men are our ancestors, how about that. The title is somewhat misleading however:

What about Asians?

That's what I can never understand. If Africa was such a fine place that it's not only where the homo genus began but also where several later versions began and where homo sapiens began.........you'd think there'd be hordes of people queuing to get back in and we'd have books called 'Back To Africa'.

They must still be talking in the context of native populations (pre-gloablisation, modern mass movements of people in air-planes, etc).

Intersting.

I would really love now to DNA test S├ębastien Chabal

I just read an interesting quote on that site, from another article about human evolution (about being the only human species alive today)

As University of New South Wales anthropologist Darren Curnoe, who identified Homo gautengensis, told me, it's very unusual in human history for there to be just the one species- Homo sapiens.

Curnoe said, "If we compress all of human evolution into a single year, we have been alone since the last hour on December 31.

Is that a true analogy?

Seems wrong. 2,000,000 years divided by 365 x 24 hours means 228 years for an hour. Neanderthals died out around 25,000 years ago so that would be about 4.5 days. So alone since midday on the 27th ?

Maybe he has a different date for the beginning of homo?

Science Daily, circa 11/2006:

On 16 November 2006, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory issued a press release suggesting Neanderthals and ancient humans probably did not interbreed.

Discovery News, circa 7/2011:

"This confirms recent findings suggesting that the two populations interbred," Labuda was quoted as saying in a press release.

My my how time flies when we're having fun with genetics.

Here is a set of maps showing human migrations, temperature graphs indicating sea-level changes affecting migrations, and text explaining some of these. (It is also linked on earlier discussions but is useful in considering the geography and the time line.

From the full article

Fast forward to 2010, when the Neanderthal genome was sequenced. The researchers could then compare the haplotype to the Neanderthal genome as well as to the DNA of existing humans. The scientists found that the sequence was present in people across all continents, except for sub-Saharan Africa, and including Australia.

Earlier in the article it comments that they think the interbreeding occured in the middle east as we were moving out of Africa. This is before the migration down to Australia.

They will have to revamp the image. A TV film I saw a little while back, presented Neanderthals as totally grotesque physically, when most mammals are not. Communicating in grunts and displaying a nervous, bad tempered irritability the like of which is often found in the modern day French who made the film!

KenChimp zug-zug Lana!

I can imagine that Jean Auel feels somewhat vindicated now that the evidence has weighed in on the side of her pre-historic fiction novel theme of interbreeding between the Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal populations in Southern Europe.

And Neanderthal's were undoubtedly more robust than the Sapiens Sapiens they interbred with, but I doubt they were hideous in comparison. But on second thought....."Beer Goggles" work sufficiently on both sexes! I have observational evidence!

As to screen portrayals of Neanderthals, I'm rather partial to "A Quest For Fire". hehehe.

I come from so-called "Red Neck" stock and am proud of my mongrel heritage, and of the human species in total. We're all freakin' Africans. But I know some in my family that will be horrified by this news, the ignorant fools!

Most, of course, won't recognize the conclusion of the evidence. After all, a huge percentage of Americans don't accept the veracity of evolution by natural selection. In the minds of these ignoramuses, there were no Neanderthals.

And the more radical of the evangelicals and the Jehova's Witnesses believe the remains of Neanderthals and other hominid species are really the remains of the Nephilim, the offspring of the interbreeding of fallen angels with the "daughters of men".

There was a TV programme a few years back here in the UK in which several people who were ultra proud of their English heritage, thought they were racially pure with generations of English blood etc., agreed to be DNA tested. The looks on some of their faces when the results came back was precious. Some had genes from Romany stock, others from what is modern day Russia and some god forbid had genes traceable to French stock. I seem to recall one woman threatening to sue if the results were published. One man whose great, great, great grandfather could have been Romany suddenly decided you did`nt need to go back that far after all....hilarious.
