Classic.

Wonder how long it will take a Christian fundie to come along and deface it in the belief it was put up by an Atheist group?

An excellent suggestion on the FRIENDLY ATHEIST comments was this one I thought:-

It'd be really cool if an atheist group put up the same ad but with their name on it.

At least the holy rollers could have nothing to complain about.

one church is responding in a way that makes you wonder: What the hell were they thinking?

I guess a lifetime of reading the buybull as truth, praying to a non-existent sky-daddy, and regular church attendance can leave one's thinking slightly irrational and uncritical, to say the least.

Zah?  What were they thinking?

"Oh noes!  Atheists are telling people there is no god."

"No problem.  We'll just instruct them to be more sceptical."

/facepalm.

Stage Two is to have the local Atheists group sue the church for copyright infringement. More publicity.

Comment 3 by Ignorant Amos :

Ya can always rely on the holy rollers to brighten yer day.

I was raised in (and later escaped) the Church of Christ. They're horrid, but they're not Pentecostalists, as the above comment suggests. Their reading of Acts 2:1-6 is that "speaking in tongues" refers to a miraculous ability, visited upon the disciples, to be heard speaking the native language of each listener. (Babel-fish style.)

A bit of a quibble, but "Holy Rollers" normally denotes those who practice glossolalia (speaking nonsense syllables which are supposed to be part of some supposed divine language due to some supposed divine intervention.) The Church of Christers don't do that: I usually describe them as being like Southern Baptists, but more boring. (Specifically, their movement was a ca. 1803 offshoot of Methodism, Scottish New Light Presbyterianism, and Baptist denominations)

Neither the Churches of Christ nor the Pentecostalists are to be confused with the United Church of Christ, a very liberal, non-fundamentalist Christian sect (President Obama claims membership, as does novelist John Irving) which practices full inclusion of LGBT persons as clergy, and has been ordaining women for over a century.)

I realize for purposes of this discussion it's like pointing out, in a discussion of Ichneumonidae, that a particular wasp in question isn't of the Tryphoninae subfamily, but Xoridinae.... close enough for a non-specialist eye. (Courtier's Reply notwithstanding.)

Well, it probably seemed like a good idea at the time.  It's obviously meant to be reasuring.  It is one of the first things people will tell you when you hear a distressing rumor and such.

And, as the artical points out, irony impairment does seem to be a qualification for church sign writers, or something.

I guess all those years of reading cryptic text has warped their brains...and the only response they can muster is also cryptic.

PS: Funny true story, but I saw a similar church ad a few years back, except the topic was porn.

In giant bold letters it said,

PORN, What is wrong with it?

followed by small letters, churches name

Are those like the ones in "They Live!" but in reverse?

Note that they say "I know Jesus, do you?" like they'd just been chatting with him at the corner shop about the price of loaves and fishes, not the more honest (and consequently mental-sounding) "I've read and been told there was this guy Jesus, and if I imagine really hard I think I can hear him or feel like he's nearby sometimes, has that happened to you at all?" I think that's why they miss the obvious point that their religion, like many others, is essentially a self-sustaining rumour.
