This explains everything! Perry is really mole - and is acting as such an irrational religious wingnut that more people will turn to an atheistic (or at least secular) world view. I had thought he was an automaton - but instead he is just a terrible actor. Go Perry - drive all those potential non-believers to our welcoming arms.

Given that it's just the capital "A" from the Zapfino font, I'm inclined to presume coincidnece is the most likely explanation.

I'd like to imagine that we have an agent in the graphics department. At the very least, maybe the "A" will get some free press. BTW, does anyone know the font for the "OUT CAMPAIGN" lettering? THNX

If you turn your computer upside down, or stand on your head, and look at the A in Governor Perry's ads, and mentally remove the crossbar, it almost looks like the V symbol from the old television series V, which was all about an invasion of Earth by lizard-like aliens who ate live mice 'n shit. The resemblance is even more pronounced if you imagine the V coloured red.

Is this evidence that America's next president, like the entire British Royal Family and Noel Edmonds, is actually a reptilian invader from beyond the moon?

Dude don't look remotely human to me.

So conspiracy theories are accepted on here so long as they're for atheism? This doesn't make any more sense than the 9/11 thermite story to me.

This must be the atheist equivalent to seeing the virgin Mary in a piece of toast or Jesus on a toilet seat. Rest assured there is a perfectly rational explanation to this occurrence. There is no conspiracy happening here. It is just a Zapfino A. ;)

As a graphic artist, I reviewed the video and noticed that Zapfino was used on the f, n, and one o in the word "for." A different font was use for the "o" in another "for."

Chances are this video was low budget so the creator used the system fonts rather than purchasing new type. My guess is that the designer for the atheist "A" did the same thing. Using a system font is telltale of a low budget, lack of creativity, or lack of knowledge of typography. (It would be wise for the people responsible to say - yeah yeah we intended on using the atheist "A" so they don't look like creative hacks.)

A proper logo should not use a single letter from a font that is in the public domain and can be downloaded for free. Zapfino is one of the free system fonts you get when you buy a Mac, but don't use very frequently. There is nothing unique about the atheist "A" It's a Zapfino "A" colored red. Hopefully, this atheist "A" was a freebie. Maybe it's time for the "A" to be changed. My guess is that it cannot be copyrighted anyway.

Mike, I've discovered that it's often quite a good idea when commenting on a new thread to make a note of how it's been tagged. In this case, it's: ATHEISM, HUMOUR, POLITICS.

Like the article itself says the Atheistic A is "created with the Zapfino font". And the A in the ad is not even red.

So it really is not all that amazing or interesting.

Not quite worth a chuckle, but it brought a smile to my face. It is just within the realm of possibility that this was an intentional wink by someone at the ad agency, but more likely it is just a coincidence.

On a more serious note, I don't doubt that many atheists will vote Republican, as they do in every election--there are plenty of libertarian atheists, both of the Ayn Rand persuasion and otherwise, and they pop up frequently on comment threads on this very site. Their hatred for government and taxes is vociferous enough that it trumps trifling issues like science, reason, justice, and the environment.

Sorry to burst your sceptical bubble, ladies and gents, but you are wrong. No conspiracy here....

This is a deliberate ploy by Perry to usurp the symbology of the Zapfino 'A' and dilute the resonance it has with the atheist 'community'.

It is the small beginning to a much larger campaign to strip atheist, secular, humanist etc voters of any flag to salute, as it were.

It should be bloody obvious.

Now, gotta go as I've just seen a yeti loping across my lawn, chasing one of those pesky aliens that keeps knocking on my door asking if I want to be probed......

I do smell a conspiracy. If you look at the Zapfino A in the linked image the horizontal bar quite obviously extends outside the main body of the letter. both Richards Atheist A, and the one used in the video that isn't the case. So it can't be a case of just using a common font.

It's quite clearly an attempt to reach out to us. Maybe Perry is a deep (deep, deeep) cover Poe!

Man, what next, Dawkins' face in burnt toast?! :-))))) LOL!

Reminds me of that business of the late great immensely talented Ronnie James Dio - Some fundies reckon that if you take the "DIO" band logo and invert it , it spells "Devil" Its written in a fancy heavy Germanic looking font anyway, so it probably does.... but then if you sort of look at anything with sort of squinty eyes half shut you can probably see anything....

Anyway, still miss you RJD,

Remember to say no to the aliens every time. If you let them do it just once, they'll never stop coming to your door.

I thought the Mormons and Jehovah's witnesses were annoying.... say you don't suppose they could be aliens in disguise do you? It would explain so much...
