Sad events for the people and families involved. Unfortunately, it's just another everyday common example of how "religion poisons everything."

western education is sinful

When you have an attitude that knowledge and education is a sin, you are a lost cause (and a very dangerous one at that)

"western education is sinful" ...obviously mis-translated; should read: "western education is sinfully expensive".

One day about noon, during Ramadan, I was being driven from the airport to our Consular Agency in Kaduna - a town in the north of Nigeria. We came across a young man lying unconscious in the road. Someone had gone to the considerable trouble of dragging a large rock next to the boy's head - on the traffic side so that cars would have to swerve to avoid the body.

As my driver explained, the young man had, most likely, fainted in the insupportable heat of the day because of not having eaten since sun-up as required by Islamic law. I asked the driver to stop so that we could help - the car had a first-aid kit and several bottles of water on board. He said that we couldn't stop to help because us "white folks" would be assumed to be christian and he/we would not be able to control the mob that would quickly appear if we tampered with the will of Allah.

How do we, in all good conscience, deal with such stupidity?

It wants to impose Islamic sharia law across the country, which is split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims.

Not much chance of an educated civilisation there then!

western education is sinful

They seem to have studied explosives, if little else!! - Then there's the oil! - Even less chance of civilisation!

Rather than "western education is sinful", it is probably more accurate to translate Boko Haram as "western knowledge is forbidden".

A video went viral not so long ago which originated in Nigeria. A man stole something and the crowds went wild. They beat the crap out of him, doused him in petrol, put a tire over his head, and then set him alight in the middle of the street. Not content with that, they then set about building a bonfire over his burning body before scattering, most likely due to boredom because there was no sign of any police.

I firmly believe that most African countries are lost causes.
