A couple years ago, the first atheist to be elected into a North Carolina public office was Cecil Bothwell, who is still on the Asheville city council today. He was featured on Rachel Maddow's MSNBC show and this website: http://richarddawkins.net/articles/4814-show-your-support-for-asheville-n-c-council-member-cecil-bothwell

Now he's running for Congress to knock out our incumbent representative Heath Shuler, who is a member of the Christian power-politics group The Family. Bothwell doesn't accept corporate financing, which makes him all the more reliable on networking and individual donations from people like us. Even if you don't live in Western NC, getting Bothwell into Congress would be an excellent way to boost secular political presence in Washington. Check out his website! (bothwell2012.com)
