Westboro Baptist Church to attend Reason Rally with special message for atheists - Comments

Damn! I have tickets to the Albuquerque Dog Ball on that date.

If I had only known that the premier wackaloons of wackaloonville were going to be at the Reason Rally! Invited? Too rich!

Somehow I am not quite sure that inviting them along is that good an idea. I have a dislike of godbotherers in general. I shan't be there anyway so it doesn't really bother me.

I think even die hard evangelists dislike these people because of all the bad publicity they give them so maybe it isn't such a bad move as it will attract even more publicity to the Rally.

This bunch of lunatics are banned from entry into the UK. Or at least the senior members are.

Perhaps someone needs to tell Fred Phelps of the research showing homophobia is linked to repressed homosexuality. :-)

This isnt a church its a cult and I mean that in the most extreme way. We can joke about catholics and evangelicals ect but if you look this group up its scarey. I dont see any good coming from this.

I'm not sure what useful purpose is served by helping to generate for the WBC the very oxygen of publicity which this tedious clan of media-whores so desperately crave.

i suppose they are quite at liberty to attend...not sure it was a brilliant idea to actually invite them...

Unless it was to provide a little entertainment for the media outlets...and the attendant inevitable bad press for the atheist cause of course! Cos no matter how restrained the atheists will be the cult will instigate any shenanigan to get the headlines it is after-all what they are after and they will look for confrontation above all... it is what they do especially in front of the camera's!

The Westboro Baptist Church is a gift from God to atheism. They are probably just as effective in promoting atheism as any "new atheist" ever were. The more publicity they get, the better it is.

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no god...” Psalm 14:1

I think I agree with that. The heart is only a muscle. All the heart really does is pump blood, so you are indeed a fool if you think that your heart ‘says’ anything at all to you.

It’s our brains that say things to us. My brain tells me not that “there is no god”, but rather that there is no compelling evidence that the god of the bible (or any other god) is real. See the difference Mrs Phelps-Roper? That’s probably what your brain would tell you as well. If you used it.

Why in the world would anyone invite these awful, bigoted, and hateful media whores/professional trolls to this event? WBC thrives on attention from individuals/groups and on media coverage. If you stop giving them what they want, they will eventually become as irrelevant as should be now. Why encourage their nastiness? Why provide them with a platform? Why feed them? I can't wrap my brain around the "reasoning" behind this invitation.

I think that was a pretty clever PR move. On the one hand, the WBC constrain themselves to a very specific form of protest demonstration, which might have some governing effect upon other groups. On the other hand, the assorted evangelicals would have a true gauge of inane batshittery against which they could compare their own behavior, and perhaps come away with second thoughts.

This sounds like an awfully silly mistake. There are already many Christian groups who have decided to invite themselves and bully their way into disrupting this event. Now this puts the seriousness of the event into question. Also, atheism does not necessarily mean reasonable, and an atheist political party does not sound reasonable at all.

Exactly.

I don't think this is smart or clever. In fact it makes the National Atheist Party look like it is as desperate for any attention it can get too.

I love it!!!!! Brilliant!!!!! And I hope they [Removed by moderator] give the Atheists reasons to sue the hell out of them so the don't have the means to go picket soldiers funerals and upset the families who are mourning the loss of a loved one. I trust the Atheists will be able to remain level headed.

Isn't it so that they have to respect a certain distance to the activity they protest? Then they'll make a nice side show, if one of the speakers would be a bit too tedious or difficult. I'll suggest they take the stand next to the hamburger tent, but not too close in order to avoid indigestions.

The WBC is rightly vilified for hating gays, soldiers, people who aren't christian enough, etc, etc. When they picket the Reason conference there may be some spillover sympathy for atheists, where there wasn't any before. A common enemy, at least.

And: why NOT invite everybody?

Is that Captain Piccard?

I would not invite the WBC. Having them there pretty much completes the spectrum of reasonableness, and they may have a calming effect on those who would like to argue with atheist, but don't want to compared to the WBC.

The reason I woulnd' invite them is that they are publicity hounds, with no interest in discourse or dialog.

They are best ignored. Just politely walk around them as if they were an inconveniently placed thorn bush.

For every action there is an equal an opposite reaction!

Reason Rally + Prime example of unreason!

It could produce media coverage of lots of silly evangelical theists arguing amongst themselves, provided that the atheist groups remain cultured and reasonable in presenting issues of importance, and simply ignore them.

Westboro Baptist Church could well present prime examples of the negative effects of theism, which might otherwise be credibly disputed by more moderate theists.

This explains why they did not show up to harass the families of the teens killed in the Chardon High School shootings. They were saving up money to go to DC.

[Removed by moderator]

Please everyone, act reasonable, rational, and be intelligent. Don't pick any fights. Don't give them any attention by answering back. If they seem to want to pick a fight, let it go. Discourage others from being distracted by the WBC. I think they would like nothing better than to get in the news and ruin our efforts. Don't give them any reason to legitimately demonize us. Focus on the people that matter. This is what is possible when people stand together.

Peace!

It is Piccard and I thought it expresses exactly the sense of dread I feel about this idea . What can be achieved by this? other than perhaps elevating atheist to the second most distrusted group in the USA ,if we're lucky But who knows ? , it's said " all publicity is good publicity " or it could be an identification among extremist groups
