For Immediate Release

Washington DC, Friday May 11, 2012 – The Clergy Project originated from a growing awareness of the presence of unbelieving religious leaders and a concern about their dilemma after they moved beyond faith.

There were three sources of this awareness and concern: a preliminary study of “Preachers Who Are Not Believers,” by philosopher Daniel Dennett and researcher Linda LaScola, stories of the life experiences of former clergy that Dan Barker of the Freedom from Religion Foundation (and former minister) had collected, as well as discussions between Dan Barker and Richard Dawkins, regarding the need to help clergy who want to leave ministry.

The Clergy Project private site was launched in March, 2011 with 52 founding members - our public site www.clergyproject.org was created in October 2011. The Clergy Project is currently managed and operated by member volunteers.

In March of 2012, Teresa MacBain, former Methodist Minister was named acting Executive Director by a Board of Directors made up of Clergy Project members and stakeholder supporters.

Members of the public can submit donations on behalf of the Clergy Project to the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science; richarddawkins.net, or the Freedom from Religion Foundation; ffrf.org.

About The Clergy Project

The Clergy Project is a private, invitation only, online peer support community for active and former clergy who no longer hold supernatural beliefs - to date we have over 230 members and growing.

Our members who identify as atheist, agnostic and freethinker, use the forum to network and discuss the challenges of being an unbelieving leader in a religious community.

The Clergy Project’s public and private websites have both been made possible with the contin-ued funding and technical support of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.
