Puritanism - the fear that someone, somewhere is happy

This is hilarious, on two fronts... one is the idea that a 77 year old, supposedly celibate Nun has anything meaningful to say on the topic of sexuality, and the other is the Vatican not understanding that they should leave left well enough alone.

I am probably being too harsh on the old Nun. Having not read her book, I will assume that she has some insight and perspective that may indeed have relevance, but had it not been for the Vatican denunciation, I probably would never had any inkling to go beyond the liner notes.

Now for the Vatican to denounce it 6 years after it was publish shows just how on top of things they are, and how they don't understand how the new world works. Through their own stupidity, they have brought more attention to what they had hoped to prevent than it ever would have gotten otherwise. It also shows in vivid detail and what undoubtedly end up on the national news, what an incredible bunch of douche bags they really are.

All I can do is laugh at their stupidity whilst cringing at their inane attempt to enforce their outdated, misogynistic, homophobic and irrelevant views on their (still too many) followers.

Thanks Vatican, for helping convert your own over to Atheism.

The fact that a nun is softening and mitigating the hard-line anti-sexual stupidity of the RCC, is largely irrelevant to the modern world, - just like their fudged homo-centric "theistic evolution" and "theistic cosmology", is irrelevant to science.

It is just another rear-guard action, as they are forced to retreat from their ridiculously entrenched positions of dogmatic ignorance. Many people have sexual energy which they are not going to have repressed to divert it into evangelical zeal or mass sheeple production! Get over it!

Eureka! I've disproved evolution by natural selection. The perpetuation of these moldy, sexless old farts.

They must have a cloning facility somewhere, there is just no other possible way...

Yes cracks me up. And what about all those elderly atheists who've never even been religious complaining about how bad it is. You've got to laugh.

It won't convert them to atheism. Catholics have been disregarding the Church's teachings on contraception and sex for decades. They still go to Mass and call themselves Catholic.

Perhaps the Vatican has shares in the publishing company. The book is currently sold out on Amazon.

One has to wonder what sort of sick and twisted mind first though up the notion not only that pleasure is bad......but that somehow pain and suffering are good ! All one can say is that thousands....millions of people....have deprived themselves of what little pleasure they could have had, all on the edicts of that one idiot.

Just commenting on the title...

Pleasure as sin...

Just part of a highly effective system of control by religion.

Religion seeks to dictate what you can wear, what you can eat, and when, who you can have sex with, when you can have it and how you can have it. It stipulates times of the day and days of the week when you have to fall to your knees. It degrades you and sets itself up as the only path of redemption.

If you relinquish these basics to them then they control you.

The idea of religion is the ability to control its believers into accepting whatever it says, in this case pleasure is a sin because you might enjoy yourself and realise that there is more to life than worshipping an invisible friend.

Pain and suffering are a sort of atonement for sin that buys His grace. Surely He would not let you suffer for nothing? He is omnipotent but witholds help for your own good. Only His infinite endurance helps overcome His infinite compasssion over the dying child. You see, don't you? Believe, do not reason. Only then you will see.

Not only is Pain and suffering good, and useful as atonement. Indeed the entire religion is based on this central premise:

The premise that whatever we do, we're un-worthy, sinful and deserving of eternity in hell. Only trough the ultimate sacrifice, the torture and killing of Jesus, can we be forgiven. The more you think about it, the less sense it makes. God doesn't love us despite having killed his son. He loves us because we killed his son.

If an actual person behaved like God does, we'd send him to the nice house with the padded walls.

Well in response to btheist in comment 2, I would say that a 77 year old celibate nun might have quite a lot of expertise in the area of "self pleasuring" at least.

But, quite seriously, I think a person can research topics like sexuality without having experience of all its varieties. I can appreciate the Kama Sutra without being remotely capable of many of the more challenging positions.

So I guess people in the most extreme poverty that keep having children even though the parents can't even provide a spoon full of rice is ok, but distributing birth control to said people is blasphemy.

You would think they would keep their mouth shut on sexuality after their surrogates have been proven to be mass child molesters.

Well good sister mother Theresa was all for that...in fact so tickled was her righteous bone she almost insisted upon it. An interesting article by Sanal Edamaruku who incidentally explained the scam behind a katolik' miracle recently and is now being persecuted by the RCC for revealing the truth.

They are accusing him of...

“deliberately hurting religious feelings and attempting malicious acts intended to outrage the religious sentiments of any class or community”

They hateses the truth precious they really hateses it!

(Actually they really hate being found out more then anything)

Those lily white ladies of old have strayed too far from Rome, and alas, they've been corrupted by a sexy suitor named America. I say we seize on the moment and barrage these nun's with as much science and reason as we can muster while they're still at an impressionable age. And also we should continue to remind them about what has happened to the precious children in their charge. Can't forget that, or at least I can't.

I would thoroughly enjoy seeing the look on the face of his holiness when he realizes that they've catapulted this story into orbit, there by propping up the church for another public pounding. Though on second thought, I'm not sure his face would satisfy, eyes hollow, drooling and dilapidated. And it'll probably be awhile, as the news apparently take six years to reach the vatican and by then he'll be dead. Oh well, all's well that end's well! Happy early No Human's Infallible Day!
