Pietronero and his men have been promoting a fractal matter distribution for years now. They may be right, but much more work is needed here. The isotropy of the cosmic microwave background (to within 1/100 000 of a Kelvin) combined with the reasonable assumption that our location in the Universe is not special provides a strong argument for large-scale homogeneity.
