Many of us prefer the government, via the NIH or other agencies, to fund it because it is then in the public domain and all can benefit more easily. The party 'realizing a profit' from the research will most likely restrict it by charging a high price to recover their investment quickly and then want 10 or 20 billion dollars more. We pay either way but govt funding will cost us less. My 89 year old mother would pay $500/month for her meds, which she can't afford without going out of country to obtain them for $150/month.
