I'm not sure if this idea has been explicitly highlighted, but does anyone think that Obama shows courage for speaking out against fundamentalists?
(I'm embarrassed because this is probably, implicitly, obvious to all, but) I think this facet is worth identifying clearly, because it must take courage to actively alienate a large, and loud, group of the American electorate (not the moderates but the fundamentalists).
Either he knows he could/can/will do that and still win the election, and/or he wants to win only while being honest.
(I don't know if I am right; I'm just putting the idea out there.)
