Shostak's a good guy. He's a bit of a ham, but he interviews a lot of top scientists on his weekly "Are We Alone?" podcast. It's aimed at the general public. He's got a PhD in Astronomy from CalTech and works at the SETI Institute. The SETI Institute in collaboration with the University of California Berkeley's radio astronomy lab is constructing the Allen Telescope Array - a radio telescope that can simultaneously perform radio astronomy research and search for intelligent radio signals.
