Heres a video of a near miss - an atmosphere grazing meteor that didnt actually hit the deck:

That was the famous Grand Teton meteor of 1972

Had that one hit the ground and exploded it would have been spectacular and possibly catastrophic. Some commentators have pointed out that it would have been like a nuke.

And right in the middle of the Cold War......
