The reason some scientists pander to religion is that they understand too well that being perceived as attacking religion may cause them to be physically attacked, even killed. You have to be very strong in your beliefs to put your own life at risk (and maybe that of your family, your neighbourhood, even your city) because you can be quoted as saying "Without proof of existence, there is no reason to believe in any deity.",
