I love Coyne's thinking, but can't help but be reminded of Rorshach's (near) last words, in both book and film of Watchmen: "No compromise. Even in face of armegeddon"
I think there's as much a political (large and small 'P') and hearts-and-minds battle to be won as there is an obligation for science to refuse to compromise in the face of irrational faith, and i'm not sure how the circle can be squared.
