I'd add that checks and balances are probably more important in a functional society than voting. We see this time and again where regimes change - if Iraq and Afghanistan certainly but also in Africa and Latin America. Real accountability is what makes a difference on the ground, and shouldn't be confused with the fetish for putting an X in a box. By some meaures, much of Europe is less democratic than Iran, but I know where I'd rather live.
The article here speaks of one group being able to railroad the process. That would be just as bad an outcome if the dominant group were secular atheists like ourselves.
