In strong contrast to evangelical Christianity, Judaism makes the common-sense distinction between those who merely mess/screw up now and then- making honest mistakes- but whose direction & life-orientation are still good, and those who are fundamentally rotten and going in the wrong way.
Strict Evangelicals claim that once you have made any small slight mistake at all you have become in God's eyes a miserable sinner deserving damnation. This both goes against common sense, and is based on a troubling reading of one of Paul's letters.
As John Wesley said to a Calvinist acquaintance "Your God is my devil".
