It's the taboo. It doesn't matter how nice we are, people will take offense not so much at our ideas and opinions, but by the very fact that we exist (I now just laugh when people call Dawkins shrill: he's about as quiant and British as anyone can come). It's impossible to make the religious types see us as anything other than harsh and sardonic, because they're so childishly attached to their ridiculous superstitions that any challenge invokes a sort of Borderline reaction from them.
