Alas, Scientific American has for some time been deteriorating too. Their covers are becoming steadily more we're-all-going-to-die sensational as their content becomes less so. It seems that everyone in science fanboi publishing is hurting and trying the same scheme: attract more readers by sinking to their level.
I recently threw out a stack of SciAms from the 80s and 90s. They were serious mags, and more recent stuff is pale by comparison. They still have good articles, but you'll get no more than one or two per issue, with the rest of the mag filled up with how we can save humanity by turning off our taps and sucking all our energy out of hot rocks.
