I see the role of âchanceâ in terms of a table -
The category Random includes wind velocity and mutation.
The category Non-random includes windmill and natural selection.
As a subtle point, the category Random may define ârandomâ differently in different applications, but that does not impact the category Non-random including windmill and natural selection.
Iâm sure my explanation could be improved, but my main point is to agree with PZ that truly explaining evolution by natural selection needs to include the random aspect. It really is part of the model of how it works.
