From what I just read at the Times Online, the Vatican seems to be pursuing trademark protection (not copyright), and they want to control use of The Vatican®, Holy See®, Pontiff®, and Pope®.
But to keep a brand name like Kleenex® from becoming a âgenericizedâ name that anyone can use, there are rules about how the owner of a trademark needs to make this clear by showing the trademark (at least here in the US). So with Christmas coming up this week, I look forward to watching the Pope® deliver his address on television from The Vatican®.
It seems to me the Vatican has not been doing this due diligence for hundreds of years, so theyâve already fallen victim to genericide. But Iâm not a lawyer, and trademark law has many subtle stories.
