Unless I am mistaken, they were trying to replicate the action of the original protein after making random changes to it. That's not necessarily what would be happening in evolution, rather the proteins created from mutated genes would be acting in a different capacity to do different things or in different pathways.

Did they test all of these resultant proteins in a variety of situations, or just to see if it had the original activity?
