Its always been the case that women outnumber the men in church, even during the roman period this was so.
The sociologist Callum Brown has argued that this is why the churches have experienced such a decline in recent decades. During the 1960's women became empowered in ways unheard of before, and the male hierarchies of the churches attacked these new freedoms. Result; Women voted with their feet. Churches emptied.
