Attack of the Theocrats!
My take on what's happening here is this: both religious groups and political parties attract members who believe in the power of collective action. But the trend in modern society is away from this and towards individualism, so membership of both groups is declining. We can expect to see an increasing overlap between the groups; and a subsequent increase in the role of religious belief on politics (and vice versa).
On the other hand we have the increasing secularisation of society via education and the Internet which will eventually drop the number of religious believers to an insignificant level. Hopefully this trend will kick in soon and save us from too many stupidities like this.
