Indeed so, but not nearly as shameful as it used to be. And were there official machinery in place to support sex workers, it would be considered less shameful still. It is that very sense of sordidness and shame that is holding us back, and needs to be overcome. As long as we still consider it shameful and wrong simply to offer sex for material gain then the desire to improve matters will be lacking.
