I am sticking with my hand-based theory of intellectual development (mainly because I thought of it). I think a lot of our mental abilities would provide little or no advantage for things like food-cooking and tool-making if we had not first evolved limb-grabbing hands which have the secondary ability of performing those more complex tasks.
I think we are also 3rd in line behind mice.
