If newspapers are going to be approached singly and picked off one by one (as could be the intention behind this disgusting strategy) there could very likely be serial capitulation.

Is there not some umbrella organisation to which newspaper publishers belong that is capable of persuading all newspapers to stand firm solidly against this intimidation by organising a block rejection of these craven apologies? This would reverse the balance of power. If this could be achieved, it would go a long way to protecting free speech. As Hitch says, something must be done to stop these threats.
