That the NAS has agreed to host the announcement of the 2010 Templeton prize is indeed a joke, but I’m somewhat taken aback by Richard’s (and others on this board) hostility towards Francis Collins. Silly religious beliefs aside, Collins is a genuine, intelligent scientist. And I have to think that if he applied the same rigor to checking the veracity of the assertions made by his religion’s holy book as he does with his science, he would renounce his Christianity. He accepts the fact of evolution and even goes as far as trying to explain to Christian readers of his book why they are barking up the wrong tree when they deny the evidence for evolution.

By all means, ridicule the NAS’ decision. Ridicule Collins’ religious beliefs. But don’t ridicule Collins the scientist.
