Perhaps - I certainly agree that his devoted legions will probably believe anything he says. Maybe i'm too cynical, but I see him as a very calculating and talented political schemer who knows exactly whats going on and has decided that a red herring offense is the best form of defense. Even if the whole world was in on a conspiracy to attack the RCC, it doesn't undo what (or who... ) the priests have done.
