I'm amused that people think the Church is stupid enough to not destroy the paper trail as soon as it becomes even remotely likely they'll be investigated. To the contrary, I'd bet they would come up with stacks of documents detailing hundreds of cases where children signed affirmations that nothing at all ever happened.
Child abuse experts work with numbers of 1:18 to 1:20, relating the known to the unknown and unrevealed cases. The guys who get caught are a tiny minority.
