Richard Dawkins has frequently suggested that childhood indoctrination into religious belief can permanently disable certain areas of the mind. He points out that many otherwise intelligent and rational people so affected, are unable to think straight when it comes to religious matters, beliefs and loyalties. This would explain why so many ordinary, decent catholics, with the facts of Ratzinger's culpability in covering up priestly child abuse staring them in the face, nontheless continue to excuse and defend him in the comments section of certain newspapers.

And it's the same willingness to ignore evidence in favour of wishfull thinking that creates religion in the first place. A better argument for getting rid of faith schools (where so much of this indoctrination of vulnerable minds takes place) would be hard to find.
