Although I agree that we are not literally looking at our past, I think that a comparison can be (tentatively) made if you look at the chimps as a 'mirror' to our evolutionary past.
If evolutionary change happens fastest when an organism is adapting to new surroundings, as could be proposed for our own development once 'we' left the forests, there may be a case that the chimps, being better suited to their environment, had no need of such an evolutionary 'burst', even though their actual development may be on lines similar to our own.
