Richard, your comment about them refusing to consider that he's atheist reminded me of something interesting:
Did you know that christians in the middle ages believed that muslims worshipped Apollo? Basically, they divided the world into christians and non-christians, with the non-christians being one homogenous mass of pagans. Therefore, muslims worshipped the greek gods, and in particular Apollo. QED. Quite similar to the "he's not christian, therefore he's muslim" assumption you pointed out.
My point is, there are remarkable similarities between ignorant people of yesteryear and ignorant people today.
