I don't know enough about the personalities in this little contretemps but something comes across very strongly to me. There is a definite suggestion of "If you're not with us your against us", or even " If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem". I really do not like that attitude. I expect it from greedy priests, gullible faitheads and politicians. I rather hope that rationalists might be above that sort of thing.
By all means attack Shermer's article where you think he is wrong. Any honest writer expects this, indeed, over time it should improve the writing if the writer is able to learn from honest criticism. Leave the ad hominem attacks to those who nothing else to attack with. You know who I mean.
