As bogus as the Lateran treaty might be, it's infinitely more legitimate than the forged Donation of Constantine which served as the basis for the RCC's claim to temporal authority in Europe -- even long after it was proved to be a complete fabrication.

How can Catholics not defend the Pope -- no matter how half-heartedly? He's the Vicar of Christ! It would be like tossing Jebus himself under the Pope-mobile.
