Talking of half hearted defences, there’s a lovely one quoted in today’s Guardian – from someone called Danny Curtin (apparently “the leader of the largest youth movement in the Church”):
“The 3,000 young people who will greet him (the Pope) do not have issues or problems with their faith. The sex abuse issue just does not come up – they know that safeguards have been put in place in the church to protect them over the last few years."
So that’s all right then.
