I think religious people see science as another religion that is aiming to "take over" their own set of beliefs, and this explains the walls they set up in their minds against it. They think that scientists and atheists and other people with rational arguements against the need for religion are simply brainwashed by another religion, because that is the experience they(religious people)know about world views: indoctrination, coercion, bullying, etc.... they are projecting their own experiences into the arguement.
