Surely the advantage in sexual selection is the increase in variety?

  1. The topic is not sexual selection but sex itself. Sexual selection is relatively easy to understand.

  2. The advantage of sex itself is indeed conventionally said to be the increase in variety, but if it were that simple Williams would not have needed to write his book. The grave problems raised by the conventional view of sex constitute Williams's starting point. In such circumstances, a word like 'surely' is best reserved for after one has read the book!
