Before anyone starts getting all excited, a lot of Indian atheist politicians are just as crooked and thuggish as their religious counterparts. Very often 'atheist' is just a label with no indication of an aversion to religion.
Case in point: Bal Thackeray claims to be an atheist but is one of the most virulent religious demagogues in the country.
