If you are at a university, which runs computer science degree courses, see if they run short courses on specific subjects, or an introductory preparatory course. Talk to the staff and technicians. If you are using university IT facilities you may already have met some of them. They may give you some good advice and may have some dismantled equipment you can look at or experiment with.
